By the end of 2024, Africa’s pension funds held over $700 billion in assets under management (AUM). This is low, (pension assets to GDP ratio of less than 40%), compared to the potential Africa has to increase its pool of available local patient capital that can drive its development agenda. Pension funds, therefore, have a significant opportunity to accelerate and power Africa’s future.
Beyond traditional investments in fixed income, equities, and real estate, these funds will drive Africa’s economic growth. This can be realised by boldly rethinking approaches towards increasing domestic savings, collaborating with like minded partners, leading the development of infrastructure, and enhancing investments in ESG initiatives.
